A masked gunman killed 14 people and wounded at least 50 in the United States, in a crowded movie theater in a suburb of Denver, Colorado, on Friday (20) during the premiere of the highly anticipated new film Batman ("Batman - the dark knight rises").

The gunman, who was wearing a gas mask, opened fire inside a mall theater in suburban Aurora, during the session of midnight, according to city police chief Dan Oates.

Before shooting, he detonated a bomb that produced smoke or tear gas "They (the audience) heard a whistle, then a kind of gas arose and the shooter opened fire," said the policeman.

Oates said the suspect was arrested in a parking lot behind the cinema.

The police ruled out the participation of another person appointed by the initial reports, crime.

The motives for the attack are still not known.

The police spokesman, Frank Fania, told CNN that the suspect is about 20 years, used a bulletproof vest and was armed with a rifle and two handguns, adding that launched some sort of smoking device for sowing panic.

According to police, the suspect was arrested in a parking lot behind the cinema. He offered no resistance.

Local media outlets have identified the suspect as James Holmes, 24, but there was no official confirmation.

The location of the attack was isolated, and police scoured the area for more explosives.

Oates said the suspect claimed to have explosives in his home.

The building where he lives was evacuated and was being searched.

According to the police, ten people died on the spot and four died after being taken to hospital.

The University of Colorado Hospital received 20 people with minor injuries, said spokesman Jackie Montgomery told CNN.

It is possible that there are children among victims.

Shooting and confusion

The attack was initiated during shooting a scene of the movie, which increased the general confusion and panic, according to witnesses interviewed by the press.

"We continue to watch the movie for a moment," he told ABC a witness, identified only as Jack. Then, after realizing that the shots were real, "everyone panicked."

CNN cited a witness saying he had seen a "man coming up the stairs slowly and shooting, picking random people."

People started running towards the exit of the cinema while the police arrived on the scene and yelled "get down", according to another witness, Banjamin Fernandez, 30, quoted by local newspaper "Denver Post."

Police did not provide information about the victims, but the film (recommended for age 13 and older in the U.S.) attracted an audience mostly teenagers and young.

Many U.S. theaters organized special sessions to 0h on Friday for the premiere of the film, which provides for raising millions of dollars in revenue.

Aurora is a suburb of Denver near the site of the 1999 school shootings at Columbine, where at least 13 people were shot dead and 24 others were injured.

Obama

The U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement it was shocked and saddened by the incident and promised to punish those responsible.

A video that show the movement of people leaving the cinema after the attack was posted on YouTube, but there was no confirmation that the incident was.
